About Doctor Mike Hansen

Who Is Doctor Mike Hansen?

Doctor Mike Hansen, MD, is a medical doctor who is both an internist and an intensivist, as well as a pulmonologist. In other words, he specializes in (and is board certified in) internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care medicine.

Between medical school, postgraduate training, and his actual practice of medicine, Doctor Mike Hansen has dedicated over 15 years of his life to understanding how to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases that affect adults.

What does it mean to be an internist?

Internists are physicians specializing in internal medicine, a discipline focused on the care of adults emphasizing the use of the best medical science available in caring for patients.

They are specially trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat thousands of various medical conditions. This includes the most common medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, diabetes, heart attack, pneumonia, and cancer.

Internists are sometimes referred to as the “doctor’s doctor,” because they are often sought out consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems.

What does it mean to be a Pulmonologist?

A pulmonologist is a doctor of medicine who specializes in the prevention and treatment of lung diseases. This includes performing certain types of procedures, such as bronchoscopy and thoracentesis.

Common diseases that sometimes required a pulmonologists’ expertise include asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and more. Pulmonologists also study cardiopulmonary fitness. This expertise allows them to help diagnose certain conditions, as well as improve a patient’s ability to optimize their fitness levels.

What does it mean to be an Intensivist?

Some internists choose to undergo further training to “subspecialize” in a more focused area of internal medicine. There are many subspecialties of internal medicine, including cardiology, gastroenterology, and pulmonary & critical care. Pulmonary and critical care is the specialty that I chose. My subspecialty training (aka a “fellowship”) consisted of an additional three years beyond the basic three-year internal medicine residency.  Specifically, his fellowship was Pulmonary Disease &Critical Care medicine. This makes him qualified as an “intensivist,” meaning he is specially trained to take care of adult patients who require the intensive care unit. This includes performing certain types of procedures, such as inserting central lines, arterial lines, lumbar puncture, intubation, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and more.
